CentOS EOL: Charting Your Course Beyond June 2024 (Free Webinar)

CentOS 7 reaches end-of-life in June! Join us for a FREE 30-minute webinar to unpack the "Beyond CentOS" whitepaper and explore your options.

CentOS Linux has been the unpaid Linux operating system of choice for Systems Administrators since the first CentOS release in May 2004—numbered as CentOS version 2—was forked from Red Hat Enterprise Linux, (RHEL) version 2.1. By leveraging the downstream version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS has become one of the most widely used unpaid open source platforms running mission-critical applications. A Consulting Study by Forrester showed that more than 50% of companies used unpaid open source software for mission-critical applications.

With the announcement of CentOS to CentOS Stream in December of 2020 , CentOS moved the project focus away from distribution downstream of RHEL to an upstream version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora2. This is great news for those developers who like to innovate and push the bounds of the Linux operating system. It is unwelcome news for those IT teams who have relied on CentOS to provide stability and reliability to run mission-critical production environments on unpaid open source.

Given that there are 415,761 enterprises using CentOS , the CentOS organization created a long tail end of life (“EOL”) for CentOS 7. The EOL culminates on June 30th 2024. At this date, the http://CentOS.org project will no longer provide any updates.
